places to go, people to see: art shoppe

Time flies. Art Shoppe has been a staple in Toronto’s design landscape for 78 years. Steeped in history, the family owned business has a long list of clients, including the Toronto international airport and the Toronto telegram building. Good news, bad news: The historic Yonge and Eglinton location shut it’s doors a few months ago (not surprisingly, the site already has a condo project in the works). But the great news is that it’s found an arguably better home in the Castlefield design district and is settling in quite well. The new showroom retains the signature Canadian-made and European-imported Art Deco-inspired collection that its customers know and love. Situated among other great design shops, the new location makes for a great day trip destination – the in-store cafe, set to open in the spring, will be a great spot to lunch among stylish furnishings. Here are some snapshots of the iconic landmark address over the last seven or so decades.
